Class introduces the addition of beads or other embellishments to make Jewelry using braiding or wiring. Class content coverage will be determined when class is scheduled. In general, techniques of arranging beads on thread or wire and making simple earrings and small formed wire type jewelry will be explored. Students will design and make a simple item, using multiple materials integrated into a finished project. There will be a charge for materials for the class.

A simple leather project that includes both stamping and either lacing or stitching will be provided. Student will choose one project from a selection of several projects to make. A leather practice piece will be provided to experiment with to select tools for the project. Project will be simple enough that the tooling stage can be completed within the class time, and complete instructions and help will be provided for the assembly step, so that assembly can be completed outside of class time if necessary. There will be a cost for the project kit and leather practice piece. Several types of simple kits are available at different costs.

Students will be given a sample piece of leather and access to standard leather tooling stamps. Guidelines will be given on use of the various leather stamps. Students will stamp and take home their completed project. There will be a cost for the leather used.

Class discusses uses of leather, tooling of leather to decorate it, basic assembly techniques of gluing and lacing. Basic tools used for hand-tooling of leather will be introduced. Options for applying the finishes to leather will be summarized. Students will hand-tool and decorate a small leather project, assemble, and apply finish during class time. Kit: contains a leather rounder to use to select and practice tooling techniques, material and instructions for one hand-tooled project and a mineral oil based final finish for the project. Project will include tooling, lacing and all steps to finish the project. Several different options for leather project kits will be offered for the student to select from.

Student will be guided to make (turn on a lathe) a wooden pen. Only one student at a time can use the lathe, so classes larger than one person will be done serially. There will be a cost associated with materials provided. Different pen “insert” kits have different costs. Pen kits purchased by the student and provided ahead of class for preparation of the wood blanks are acceptable. Blanks must be prepared in advance, so materials other than instructor provided must be provided before the class for preparation of the wood blank.

Cleaning up a porcelain item just out of a mold is a fundamental step in most porcelain projects. This step removes mold lines and minor imperfections in the casting in preparation for high temperature firing. Students will be given a cast greenware item to clean and prepare for firing. Students will be advised in the selection of best tools for the work, and techniques to clean the imperfections to prepare the item for firing. At this step, modifications to the shape of the item can also be made if desired.

Class will allow students to create custom porcelain dangles to use making jewelry. Students can choose to start at greenware, bisque or glazed stages. Each stage has different requirements for number of visits. At the greenware stage starting point, a high firing and china paint or glazing firing will also be needed, so multiple visits will be necessary. At the bisque starting point, student will apply paint or glazing (may take multiple visits) and then the items will be fired. At glazed step, firing may or may not be necessary depending on what type of paint the student chooses to use. Students will not be present during the kiln firings. There will be a charge for materials and use of the kiln.

Class will start with a cast greenware item, or a high-fired porcelain item. For a greenware item, students will clean and prepare the greenware for firing. Object will be fired and the student will return and apply liquid glaze or china paint to the project. Visits for multiple layers or colors may be necessary, with firing between each set of colors and/or glaze layers. Students will choose from a small selection of objects that are pre-molded by instructor. There will be a charge for materials for the class, and use of the kiln.

Class is an introduction to porcelain, showing structure of an unassembled porcelain doll, and other porcelain flatware. Entire process of production from molding, greenware cleanup, high firing and low-fire glazes or china painting will be discussed. Student project will include hand engraving of a porcelain greenware disk. This disk will then be high-fired and glazed after class and returned to the student.

Class must be done outside as it can be very messy. Students will dye a shirt or other object. Objects can be provided by instructor if desired. Objects should be 100 percent cotton for the colors to be colorfast. Class size will determine the amount of time needed for the class. Objects will need to be rinsed outside of class after the dye has set for at least an hour. Techniques to make several patterns will be illustrated, and materials provided to use in accomplishing the project will be provided. Six or more eight-ounce squirt bottles with dye will be provided, along with other preconditioning materials. There will be a cost associated with materials provided.
